In this context it can be said that a flashdrive is a small, ultra-portable storage device which, unlike an optical drive or a traditional hard drive, has no moving parts. The device can connect to computers and other devices via a built-in USB Type-A plug, make the device a kind of combination USB device and cable. They are often referred to as pen drives; thumb drives, or jump drives. The device is known by various names such as thumb drive, pen drive, jump drive etc. It is a very useful item as lots of important data can be stored in this single small device. The easy to carry feature is also a very great one.

There is a process by which they are used. You have to just insert the drive into a free USB port on the computer. On most of the computers, you'll be alerted that the drive has been inserted and the contents of the drive will appear on the screen, similar to how other drives on your computer appear when you browse for files. Exactly what happens when you use your drive depends on your version of Windows or other operating system, and how you have your computer configured. They are found in large number of sizes starting from 8GB to 64GB. The drives can be written and rewritten to an almost unlimited number of times, similar to hard drives. Many drives have been found to have replaced the floppy drives for the purpose of portable storage and, considering how large and inexpensive drives have become, they've even nearly replaced CD, DVD, and BD disc for data storage purposes.  The storage capacities are really large compared to other devices.
The transfer speeds of the drive is technically determined by the slowest of three factors: the USB version used, the speed in which the USB controller device can read and write data onto the flash memory, and the speed of the hardware drive, especially in the case of add-on USB ports. Thus we see that the drive has become a very important tool in the present world of technology.
